UBC Toolbox: Installation and Setup

Installation and Setup for UBC Toolbox Version 1.01 and Max 6 or Max 7:

Macintosh running Max/MSP 5 or Max/MSP 6

  1. Move the contents of the Macintosh/moveToExternalsFolder: into your MaxMSP externals folder or any location you are keeping third-party externals
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Macintosh/moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder.
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Macintosh/moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder.
  4. Launch Max and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files).

Windows XP running Max/MSP 6 or Max/MSP 7

  1. Move a copy of all files in the Windows\moveToExternalsFolder directory into your MaxMSP externals folder.
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Windows\moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder.
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Windows\moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder.
  4. Move a copy of the fftw3.dll file located in the Windows\moveToCycling74Folder into the Cycling '74 folder.
  5. Launch Max/MSP and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files).

Installation and Setup for UBC Toolbox Version 0.98 and Max 5 or Max 6:

Macintosh running Max/MSP 5 or Max/MSP 6

  1. Unzip the appropriate folder located in the Macintosh/moveToExternalsFolder: Double-click on 5(INTEL).zip. Once the file has uncompressed, move the contents of the uncompressed folder into your MaxMSP externals folder. This is probably: /Applications/Max5/Cycling '74 folder/msp-externals
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Macintosh/moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder: /Applications/Max5/max-help
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Macintosh/moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder: /Applications/Max5/patches/extras
  4. To use the vocal synthesis modules will have to install Csound5 if it is not already installed on your computer. For Csound5 installation procedure refer to the csound~_install.html file in the Macintosh/csoundDocs folder
  5. Launch Max/MSP/Jitter and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files).

Windows XP running Max/MSP 5 or Max/MSP 6

  1. Move a copy of all files in the Windows\moveToExternalsFolder directory into your MaxMSP externals folder. This is probably: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max5\Cycling '74\externals
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Windows\moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max5\max-help
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Windows\moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max5\Cycling '74\patches\extras
  4. Move a copy of the fftw3.dll file located in the Windows\moveToCycling74Folder into the Cycling '74 folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max5\Cycling '74
  5. To use the vocal synthesis modules will have to install Csound5 if it is not already installed on your computer. For Csound5 installation procedure refer to the csound~_install.html file in the Windows\csoundDocs folder
  6. Launch Max/MSP and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files).

Installation and Setup for UBC Toolbox Version 0.92 and lower:

Macintosh running Max/MSP 4.5 or earlier

  1. Unzip the 4.5(PPC).zip file located in the Macintosh/moveToExternalsFolder. Move a copy of all files in the uncompressed folder into your MaxMSP externals folder. This is probably:
    /Applications/MaxMSP 4.3/externals/
    OR
    /Applications/MaxMSP 4.5/Cycling '74 folder alias/externals
  2. Move a copy of the CsoundLibX file located in the Macintosh/moveToCFMSupportFolder to your /Library/CFMSupport directory.
  3. Move a copy of all files located in the Macintosh/moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder: /Applications/MaxMSP 4.5/max-help
  4. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Macintosh/moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder: /Applications/MaxMSP 4.5/patches/extras
  5. Launch Max/MSP/Jitter and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files). Once this is done, you should quit MaxMSP and re-launch it

Macintosh running Max/MSP 4.6 or later (on Mac-Intel or Mac-PPC )

  1. Unzip the appropriate folder located in the Macintosh/moveToExternalsFolder: if you are running MaxMSP on an Intel Dual Core computer double-click on 4.6(INTEL).zip, if you are running on a PPC computer double-click on 4.6(PPC).zip. Once the file has uncompressed, move the contents of the uncompressed folder into your MaxMSP externals folder. This is probably:
    /Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/Cycling '74 folder alias/externals
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Macintosh/moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder: /Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/max-help
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Macintosh/moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder: /Applications/MaxMSP 4.6/patches/extras
  4. To use the vocal synthesis modules will have to install Csound5 if it is not already installed on your computer. For Csound5 installation procedure refer to the csound~_install.html file in the Macintosh/csoundDocs folder
  5. Launch Max/MSP/Jitter and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files). Once this is done, you should quit MaxMSP and re-launch it before opening the UBC Toolbox modules.

Windows XP running Max/MSP 4.3 or later (4.6 for Jitter modules)

  1. Move a copy of all files in the Windows\moveToExternalsFolder directory into your MaxMSP externals folder. This is probably: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\MaxMSP 4.6\Cycling '74\externals
  2. Move a copy of all files located in the Windows\moveToHelpFolder to your MaxMSP help folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\MaxMSP 4.6\max-help
  3. Move a copy of the NAStarter file located in the Windows\moveToExtrasFolder to your MaxMSP extras folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\MaxMSP 4.6\Cycling '74\patches\extras
  4. Move a copy of the fftw3.dll file located in the Windows\moveToCycling74Folder into the Cycling '74 folder: C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\MaxMSP 4.6\Cycling '74
  5. To use the vocal synthesis modules will have to install Csound5 if it is not already installed on your computer. For Csound5 installation procedure refer to the csound~_install.html file in the Windows\csoundDocs folder
  6. Launch Max/MSP and add a File Preference (under the Options/File Preferences menu) for the UBCToolbox folder (this should allow access to all the modules, picts, and other necessary files). Once this is done, you should quit MaxMSP and re-launch it

Where to put your files:

  1. Do not move the modules or any of the patches from their installed locations, and do not modify the original files (especially the ...BP (bpatcher) patches) unless you are confident you know what you are doing.
  2. Place all soundfiles you want to use in the soundfiles folder (or in a sub folder inside the soundfiles folder).
  3. Keep your own files in a location other than the UBCToolbox folder. This will enable you to upgrade to new versions of the UBCToolbox without your own work being overwritten.
